How to Get Rid of Moss on Concrete

When it comes to external concrete floors, one of the most common problems to occur is the growth of moss. If the concrete surface is in a fairly moist area and partly shaded throughout the day, these are the perfect conditions for the green substance to grow.

If you’re not careful, moss can easily become a slipping hazard, making walkways and paths dangerous to cross which is why we encourage anyone with an external floor to make sure they are taking appropriate steps to maintain it!

Below we have put together some useful tips for maintaining your concrete floor and getting rid of moss!

Pressure Washer

Using a pressure washer to maintain your concrete floor is probably the most obvious method to arise. They are one of the fastest ways in which to remove moss from concrete by simply blasting away the area and leaving it clear.

Baking soda

This method has more of a home remedy vibe to it. Baking soda is something usually found in the back of the kitchen cupboard and it has a surprising variety of uses. The powder helps to neutralise the acidic conditions that the moss thrives within. On a dry day, all you need to do is sprinkle the baking soda over the affected areas on the concrete and leave it there for 24 hours. Once the time has passed, simply sweep the moss away!

Boiling water

This method is the most environmentally friendly way to remove the moss without the application of any additional chemicals! Simply boil the water, pour onto the moss and use a stiff brush or broom to scrub away what’s left.

Household bleach

With this method, we would recommend using rubber clothes and wearing old clothing. Mix 1-part household bleach to 1-part water and sprinkle this mixture over the moss using a sprayer. Leave this to soak into the moss for 30 seconds before using a hose to wash away or a stiff brush. Be careful not to get the bleach on desirable flora as this could also kill other plants! Be sure to check out your local garden centre as they may stock specific concentrated bleach used for removing moss from concrete!
